Some images are appropriate for tapestry and others for painting. Often, I will use tapestry to express more personal concepts. There is an innate power to tapestry both because of its historical context as a storytelling art and also because of the substantial quality of the materials used. The act of tapestry weaving is an anachronism in this day of high speed computers, e-mail and instant information. It is as slow as it was in the Middle Ages; it is an act of rebellion to make art this way. People are always surprised that a tapestry grows an inch at a time and may take months to complete. The slow pace of tapestry weaving is one of the things that draw me to it. It is a deliberatly conscious process that takes on a life of its’ own. There is also a monumentality to tapestry regardless of the size of the finished piece. It is a medium that is hard to ignore. View the process |
