| The Tapestry Process | 253. 884.2955 |
Tapestry weaving is done on loom by hand using a simple weave. The cotton warp threads, which are tied to the loom, are covered by different colored wool weft threads. The colors used are determined by a large drawing called a cartoon that hangs behind the warp. Each color change in the cartoon is reflected in the weaving by a bundle of yarns called a butterfly. The butterflies are woven over and under the warp threads of the particular area where that color is needed. The weft (butterflies) is packed tightly by a beater as it is woven so that only the colors show. The image progresses from bottom to top until complete. The tapestry is then cut from the loom and the threads finished for hanging.
